Watson College Recognitions

Christine Liao is the 2023 WCE recipient of the Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award. Dr. Liao is an associate professor and coordinator of WCE’s Master of Arts in Teaching in Art Education program. She was recognized at UNCW’s fall faculty meeting on September 14.

Denise Henning participated in New Hanover County’s 2023 Equity & Inclusion Summit, where she served as a panelist providing expertise on the Supreme Court’s decision to end race-conscious admissions. The Summit was held September 14-15 at Cape Fear Community College. Dr. Henning is a faculty member in the Department of Educational Leadership and director of UNCW/3C.

Larissa Malone authored an op-ed about teaching racially diverse histories in K-12 classrooms. The op-ed was published in the Portland Press Herald on September 2: Commentary: Silence is complicity – on (not) teaching Black history in Maine. Dr. Malone is an associate professor in WCE’s Department of Instructional Technology, Foundations and Secondary Education.

Kevin McClure was featured in an Inside Higher Ed story about turnover among nonfaculty higher education workers. The article, Limited Remote Work Options a Big Driver of Staff Turnover, was published on September 14. Dr. McClure is an associate professor of higher education in WCE’s Department of Educational Leadership.

Amy Moody, a nationally-recognized autism expert, was a recent guest on WHQR’s Coastline. Dr. Moody is a professor of special education and interim chair of WCE’s Department of Instructional Technology, Foundations and Special Education. The podcast, titled Darien Brooks says treatment changed profound autism to high-functioning aired on July 25.

The UNCW documentary Game On UNCW: Esports + Education was an official selection at the PopCon International Film Festival in August. The film, directed and produced by UNCW senior video producer Bradley Pearce in partnership with WCE Professor Ray Pastore and the UNCW Seahawk Esports Team chronicles the growth of Esports at UNCW. The film, first shown at UNCW’s Lumina Theater in January, won first place in the category of “Informative Video: Professional” at the DigiFest® Temecula in California earlier this year.

Alumni News

Shelly Mongelli was featured as one of WWAY’s Extraordinary People of the Cape Fear on August 29. Ms. Mongelli holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, a master’s in language and literacy and school administration add-on licensure all from UNCW’s Watson College. She began her career in education driving a bus, and went on to become a teacher’s assistant, a 1st grade teacher and an instructional coach before assuming her current role as Assistant Principal at Southport Elementary School. Daniel Sidor ’12M has been named principal of Pender Early College High School. He earned a master’s in curriculum, instruction & supervision and administration add-on licensure from the Watson College. Sidor was featured in a WECT story on September 14: New principal approved for Pender Early College High School. He was also featured in a story in Port City Daily on September 15: Pender Early College HS promotes 16-year teacher to principal.

Heather Bridgers has been selected principal for Supply Elementary School in Brunswick County. Ms. Bridgers earned master’s degrees in language and literacy & school administration from the Watson College. She was featured in a WECT story: Brunswick Co. Board of Education approves next principal for Supply Elementary.

WCE MSA alum Chris Davis is now principal at Croatan High School in Carteret County and MSA alum Adam Olander is principal of Bridges School. They were featured in a Carolina Coast story: School officials announce multiple principal changes.

Kelly Flynn has been appointed principal at Surf City Elementary School in Pender County. Ms. Flynn earned her BA and master’s in elementary education and a master’s in school administration from the Watson College. She was featured in a WECT story: Pender County Schools appoints new principals for Surf City elementary and middle schools.
