Karl Ricanek Jr. Enters N.C. A&T Hall of Fame

The Graduate College at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has inducted Karl Ricanek Jr. into its Hall of Fame, recognizing his distinguished career and enduring contributions to the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning and computer vision.

Ricanek, professor in UNCW’s Department of Computer Science and director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Identity Sciences (I³S), is a three-time graduate of N.C. A&T. He earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the university, graduating summa cum laude and holding membership in multiple engineering and academic honor societies. His academic training emphasized artificial intelligence, machine learning, software engineering and computer vision, areas that would become the foundation of his influential research career.

“It is humbling to be recognized by my alma mater,” said Ricanek. “As a student, I viewed the faculty as superheroes whose expertise and dedication inspired me. To be acknowledged in this way suggests that I may now stand a bit closer to the example they set.”

An internationally recognized leader in AI-driven facial analytics, biometrics and health intelligence, Ricanek has produced multiple patents and more than 90 peer‑reviewed publications. He co-founded Lapetus Solutions, where he served as CEO and chief AI scientist, helping to develop groundbreaking AI technologies for the insurance and financial services sectors. He is also a senior member of both the National Academy of Inventors and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Ricanek’s career includes prestigious research fellowships with NASA, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center and the National Security Agency. He also served as founding co‑director of the first Center of Academic Excellence in Science and Technology designated by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

His induction into the N.C. A&T Graduate College Hall of Fame celebrates not only Ricanek’s scholarly achievements but also his leadership, innovation and lasting impact on the advancement of AI and interdisciplinary research.
