In a testament to his unwavering commitment to leadership and educational equity, Sergio Madera-Garcia '21 has been recognized as the Distinguished Young Alumnus of the Year, a well-deserved title for his outstanding contributions to the field. Currently serving as the Leadership Development Program director in N.C. State's Student Leadership and Engagement Office, Madera-Garcia's journey towards shaping the future of education has been marked by dedication and transformative impact.

Before making significant strides at N.C. State, Madera-Garcia played a pivotal role as the program assistant and translator for UNCW's Centro Hispano. His experience at UNCW laid the foundation for his passion for leadership development and community engagement. Notably, his time at N.C. State has seen him actively involved in Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc., where he not only served as a chapter director but also assumed the role of southeast regional director during the 2022-23 term. In 2022, Madera-Garcia received the esteemed Outstanding Chapter Advisor and National Office Volunteer awards, highlighting his exemplary contributions to the organization.

Beyond his involvement in Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc., Madera-Garcia is a distinguished Latinx Ed Fellow, a participant in a program specifically designed to invest in Latinx leadership and propel efforts towards educational equity and opportunity in North Carolina. His commitment to educational excellence extends to his role as a graduate ambassador at N.C. State, where he actively contributes to fostering a positive and inclusive educational environment.

Recognizing his exceptional leadership qualities, the NCSU College of Education honored Madera-Garcia with the Leadership Award in 2023. His academic journey began at UNCW, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in communication studies, accompanied by a double minor in Spanish and leadership. Currently pursuing a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration at N.C. State, Madera-Garcia continues to demonstrate a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a deep commitment to making a positive impact on the field of education.
