The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) has unveiled a state-of-the-art OutPost container gym, now located at the Harold Greene Track and Field Complex. This innovative facility, provided by My OutFit LLC, offers a modular and portable outdoor gym solution, equipped with advanced resistance training gear from TRX Training LLC.

The OutPost gym features suspension training systems commonly used in exercise science courses and research in the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences (SHAHS). My OutFit and TRX were founded by Randy Hetrick, a former Navy SEAL, who has fostered collaborations among his companies, SHAHS and UNC Wilmington’s Office of Military Affairs (OMA).

The installation of the OutPost unit will serve multiple purposes such as providing fitness sessions for students, community partners and military organizations, while also enabling SHAHS faculty to further their research on dynamic resistance training and military fitness assessments. This new facility will enhance recreational opportunities on campus, especially in areas lacking traditional resistance training equipment.

Exercise Science Associate Professor Alex McDaniel says of the OutPost, “This OutPost isn’t just a place where we can work out. This is completely different. We can scale some of our strategic initiatives for what we do. There are research and community engagement opportunities for health care fitness individuals, including National Guard, U.S. Army and the Reserves. I know the coaches within UNCW athletics, including strength coaches and athletic trainers, are really going to enjoy this. This is an  awesome tool that we have to further our strategic initiatives here at the university.”

College of Health and Human Services Dean Jack Watson noted, “This is a great opportunity to connect with everyone around us and really fulfill the college’s mission of enhancing health and quality of life throughout our region.”
