Robert T. Burrus Jr. has been named provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina Wilmington following a national search, the university announced today.

Burrus currently serves as interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs and will transition to his new role May 1. As interim provost, he provided steady, thoughtful leadership during a period of transition, supporting academic priorities and guiding key institutional initiatives. His collaborative approach and commitment to the university community have helped maintain continuity and positive momentum across campus.

“As UNCW approaches its 80th anniversary, we are experiencing extraordinary momentum, and Dr. Burrus will serve in a pivotal role, guiding our academic mission into the future,” said Chancellor Aswani K. Volety. “From launching new programs to integrating technology-infused learning into even more academic experiences, Rob will be at the forefront of helping UNCW advance its mission while navigating complex challenges in higher education. I am excited to work with a provost who will help us build on our strengths and lead with vision, purpose and a deep commitment to student success.”

Burrus has nearly 30 years of professional experience, starting as a member of the UNCW faculty in 1998. He has served in multiple leadership roles at UNCW, including chair of the Department of Economics and Finance and associate dean for undergraduate programs.

Reporting to the chancellor and serving as a key member of the executive cabinet, the provost is the university’s chief academic officer, providing strategic leadership and oversight for all academic programs and initiatives. Burrus will build on UNCW’s strong academic foundation while championing excellence in teaching, research and scholarship, and advancing student, faculty and staff success through transparency, innovation and collaboration. Working closely with campus and community partners, the provost will help guide initiatives that strengthen student outcomes, expand research and creative activity, and advance UNCW’s regional and global impact.

“UNCW’s strong academic foundation, its commitment to student success and its growing momentum make this an especially meaningful time to lead the Division of Academic Affairs,” Burrus said. “I look forward to working with faculty, staff, students and community partners to advance academic excellence, expand opportunity and help shape a future where UNCW continues to thrive and make a lasting impact.”

The search committee, chaired by Drs. Christine Reed Davis and Steve Elliott, worked quickly and effectively with the UNC System Office, which provided search firm services for this position, to recruit the outstanding group of finalists that led the university to Burrus.

Burrus holds master’s and doctoral degrees in economics from the University of Virginia and a bachelor’s from Wake Forest University. In addition, he completed the UNC System’s Executive Leadership Program in 2024. Burrus, a native of Kinston, North Carolina, has a keen interest in supporting academic achievement and economic development in southeastern North Carolina.
