Winter weather in North Carolina can be unpredictable. Conditions like snow, ice and freezing temperatures can create challenges on campus and around our community. Your safety is our top priority. Please take a moment to review these quick tips to help you stay safe and prepared during severe winter weather.
If there is a power outage in a residence hall:
- Stay indoors and remain in your room.
- Do NOT use candles or any open flames. They’re a major fire hazard and not permitted.
- Use flashlights, battery‑powered lanterns or your phone’s flashlight for light.
- Unplug sensitive electronics to protect them from power surges.
- Keep windows closed.
- Keep your fridge and freezer closed as much as possible.
- If the heat goes out, layer up with warm clothes and blankets.
If there is a power outage in an academic or campus building:
- Follow all instructions from university staff or emergency personnel.
- Evacuate only if directed or if the building becomes unsafe.
- Use stairwells instead of elevators during a power outage.
- Do not use candles, lighters or any open flames.
To safely enjoy winter weather, keep these tips in mind:
- Do not walk or skate on ponds that may appear frozen; they rarely freeze safely in our area.
- Do not ride on sleds pulled by vehicles. This is extremely unsafe behavior that could result in serious injuries.
- Watch out when walking under icy tree branches or power lines.
- In residence halls, immediately report power outages, fire hazards or other concerns to hall staff (RA, front desk) who can help troubleshoot issues and/or contact primary on-call staff for situations that need wider attention. In the event of an emergency, call 911.
- In other areas of campus, immediately contact the University Police Department at 910-962-2222 to report safety concerns or hazardous conditions.
- Keep your cell phone fully charged as much as possible.
- Wear multiple layers, including a base layer, sweater or hoodie and an insulated jacket. Add a hat, gloves, thick socks and waterproof boots or shoes to stay warm.
Emergency Situations
Call 911 immediately in case of emergency.
Communication and Updates
- Monitor UNCW email, the university website and UNCW Alert text and app messages for updates. As a reminder, classes and activities are canceled through Monday, Feb. 2.
- If Wi‑Fi goes out, use mobile data when possible to stay connected.
