UNC Wilmington’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (UNCW CIE) launched the Thrive Lab, powered by Wells Fargo, a new multi-month development program designed to equip business owners with the skills, mentorship and strategic foundations needed to grow and strengthen their businesses.
The program aligns with recent research by the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State and Fayetteville State University, which found that adopting policies and initiatives to help 5% of “aspirational” businesses become self-sufficient will create 24,550 new jobs annually and $980 million in new wages. When considering economic multiplier effects, the overall economic boost could range up to $2 billion each year, according to the 2024 report. In response to these findings, Thrive Lab was created as a targeted effort to help strengthen businesses and support long-term entrepreneurial growth in coastal North Carolina
“It’s relatively easy to start a business, but many fail within a year and only half make it to five years. Even more striking are the entrepreneurs who don’t pay themselves and who are stuck year after year. CIE’s Thrive Lab will give entrepreneurs and small business owners the tools and connections they need to succeed and to scale, leading to direct impact for our students and community,” said Heather McWhorter, UNCW CIE director.
Beginning March 2026, Thrive Lab will guide participants through a series of sessions focused on finance, funding, sales, product strategy and leadership. Entrepreneurs will also build a strong peer network and receive hands-on support to develop the mindset and capabilities of CEOs, CFOs and CPOs, all while preserving the unique strengths that make their businesses thrive.
Thrive Lab will run from March through May 2026 and is open to qualified business owners across all industries. Space is limited, and interested applicants are encouraged to apply by the Feb. 27 deadline.
