UNCW is proud to announce a thrilling and symbolic start to its annual Veterans Week celebration and Fitness Expo with a high-impact landing by an elite all-veteran parachute team (All Veteran Group). The event will take place on Friday, Nov. 7, at 7:45 a.m. on the university’s recreational field complex off Hamilton Drive and Riegel Road, marking the official kickoff of a week dedicated to honoring service, promoting wellness and celebrating the strength of the veteran community.
The Office of Military Affairs is welcoming volunteers who wish to help hold a large U.S. flag on the field. Plan to arrive onsite at 7:30 a.m. and see Bill Kawczynski, Director of Military Affairs, for guidance. Flag holders are expected to be in place and ready, with the flag unfurled, by 7:45 a.m.
The parachute jump, featuring decorated veterans from multiple branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, is more than a spectacle — it is a tribute to courage, camaraderie and the enduring spirit of those who have served. As a university founded in 1947 on the principles of the G.I. Bill and committed to veteran success, this dramatic entrance sets the tone for a week filled with purpose-driven programming and the annual Veterans Day ceremony.
“This landing is a powerful symbol of how veterans continue to lead, inspire and elevate our campus community,” said Bill Kawczynski, director of military affairs. “It’s a moment that brings together our students, faculty and local supporters in celebration of service and resilience.”
The Fitness Expo, which follows the parachute landing, will feature veteran-themed fitness demonstrations and interactive challenges designed to engage participants of all abilities. The week’s events are open to the public and aim to foster deeper connections between veterans and the broader community.
UNCW invites media, alumni and community members to witness this unforgettable start to Veterans Week and to join in honoring those who have served. Students, faculty and staff should park in permitted spaces. Campus guests should park in the Visitor Parking lot off Riegel Road near the Fisher Field House. This lot is right across the street from the recreational field complex.
