UNCW has been working in collaboration with officials at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and local law enforcement agencies to address persistent rumors circulating on social media.
After receiving a handful of calls and emails expressing concern about the alleged mistreatment of U.S. Marines by members of university fraternities, UNCW Police have been working tirelessly with base leadership and other partners to determine the validity of these claims. Following an exhaustive effort, officials have determined that there is no truth behind the rumors. The allegations being made are solely falsehoods generated on social media. These rumors disrespect the legacy of honor and service that UNCW and the Marine Corps share.
The Truth about UNCW’s Respect for our Armed Forces
UNCW has a longstanding partnership with our military partners and community members. Founded in 1947 to help World War II veterans transition to civilian life, the university currently serves about 2,400 military-affiliated students and veterans. They make up about 12% of the university’s student body. UNCW hosted a full slate of Veterans Week events to honor members of the Armed Forces and their service to our country, which kicked off on Friday, Nov. 7, with the All Veteran Group parachute team landing onto campus. Events honoring veterans and military-affiliated Seahawks include an Annual Veterans Week Fitness Expo, participation in the southeastern North Carolina Veterans Day Parade, and a Veterans Day service and luncheon.
In addition to Veterans Week events, UNCW hosts The Honor Foundation, a 12-week transition program for the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) in Veterans Hall. The Office of Military Affairs and its beneficiaries are regularly supported by various student organizations, including those in the Interfraternity Council. Notably, the UNCW chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity has raised more than $40,000 in the past four years to support local veteran organizations through their Music for Military Heroes concert series. Following the first concert, Kappa Sigma became the first fraternity at UNCW to establish a scholarship for veterans.
The university is proud of our longstanding relationships with military organizations, reflecting our shared dedication to honor, courage and commitment. UNCW is a perennial Top 30 Best for Vets school, ranked by the Military Times, and became a Purple Heart Designated University in 2023.
