UNCW Celebrates Family Weekend, Monitoring Weather

UNCW Alert

Dear Campus Community,

Following last week’s events, we want to personally thank you for the tenacity you have shown during this trying time. We understand the fear and anxiety you may have felt last week as you received the updates about what was happening on our campus, and we thank you for the kindness and grace you have given each other and the university as we move forward together.

Today, we are taking another important step in that journey. We are bringing together 5,000 family members and students for Family Weekend. Generations of Seahawks have enjoyed this cherished tradition, celebrating special moments and building lifelong memories together. As previously announced, we have enhanced campus security. UPD has expanded its team with additional law enforcement personnel to strengthen campus coverage and increase visibility of personnel, with a focus on main campus entrances and high-visibility foot patrols.

Chancellor Volety, Chief Brinkley and Vice Chancellor Reed Davis are working tirelessly to not just hear concerns but to address them. Please call 910.962.3737 or email incidentresponse@uncw.edu to share your input.

Tonight in conjunction with Family Weekend, we are hosting a Family Forum, 5:15-6:15 p.m., in the Burney Center. We also launched an Incident Response FAQ website to provide additional information and help address common questions. It is a continued resource for the campus community that will be updated as information is available and confirmed by UPD and appropriate campus offices.

Weather

You may be wondering about the weather for Family Weekend — based on the current forecast, we have moved some activities indoors in case of rain and wind caused by a cold front unrelated to the tropical weather in the Atlantic. Please monitor the Family Weekend website throughout the weekend for additional scheduling updates.

Overall, UNCW is closely monitoring tropical weather conditions, working with area officials to issue guidance as necessary. Please monitor your UNCW inboxes, text messages, UNCW Mobile app, SafeZone app and the UNCW Alert website for information. The university will send an update by 5 p.m., Saturday, September 27 unless conditions warrant earlier outreach.

Again, thank you for the resilience you have demonstrated over the past week. Your trust and support are needed and appreciated now more than ever.
