Rip Current Risk Due to Hurricane Erin

UNCW Alert

Please be aware there is an increased beach hazard due to Hurricane Erin. While the hurricane may remain offshore, it is expected to generate dangerous rip currents along Wilmington area beaches.

The Town of Wrightsville Beach is recommending no swimming in the ocean from Tuesday, Aug. 19 through Friday, Aug. 22, due to an increase in swell activity and the presence of strong rip currents.

Please stay informed and exercise caution if you plan to visit area beaches. Before heading out, check local beach advisories and the National Weather Service's rip current risk. Pay close attention to the flags posted along the shore. These flags serve as indicators of current water conditions, including the presence of strong currents and other risks.

Learn more about rip currents and what to do if you encounter them by visiting the UNCW Environmental Health and Safety’s rip currents page.
