Update: Information about Tropical Weather Impacts

UNCW Alert

UNCW is continuing to closely monitor and carefully prepare for tropical weather conditions expected to affect southeastern North Carolina in the next few days. Based on current information from the National Hurricane Center, sustained winds and heavy rainfall are expected, mainly Wednesday through Friday. An area flood watch and tropical storm watch have been issued in New Hanover County due to projected heavy, prolonged rain and high potential for flooding.

At this time, the university plans to maintain its normal operating schedule and changes to residence hall move in days (Friday,  Aug. 16, and Saturday, Aug. 17) are not expected. Should that change, the university will send an update. In the meantime, employees should familiarize themselves with the Adverse Weather Policy. Supervisors should review their unit’s emergency operation plans.

University emergency responders will continue working with New Hanover County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service Wilmington to assess the tropical weather system’s track and to provide the UNCW community with relevant information.

Weather Safety Procedures

Now is a good time to review campus emergency procedures and personal preparation plans. Visit Environmental Health and Safety’s Emergency Management site for access to severe weather guidance and other safety tips.
There is an increased risk of rip currents along the beaches near UNCW’s main campus. Please visit the National Weather Service rip current risk site before heading to the beach.

Please be mindful of your personal safety during and immediately after stormy weather. Be sure to give yourself extra time to navigate to, from and around campus. Do not attempt to drive through standing water and do not go into any stormwater runoff, which could be contaminated or present other hazards. Be observant of your surroundings when walking across campus.

Events and Activities

Weather conditions may result in changes to event and activity schedules. Please check campus venue websites to confirm hours before setting out.

Monitor UNCW Inboxes and Channels

The university will send a campus-related update by 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7 unless conditions warrant earlier messaging. Please continue to monitor UNCW inboxes, the UNCW homepage and social media feeds (Facebook and X). In the event of university-level closings or cancellations, UNCW Alert text messages and the Emergency Information Hotline (1.888.657.5751) will be activated.
