The iconic Soaring Seahawk sculpture, a cherished emblem of our university’s spirit and pride, embarked on a new chapter on Aug. 28. The sculpture has been relocated to a more prominent position on the historic Hoggard Hall lawn, offering it a larger space.
Originally installed in May 2009, the Soaring Seahawk has become a beloved backdrop for countless alumni and student photos, particularly during commencement ceremonies. The relocation was necessary to accommodate roadway improvements on Wagoner Drive. The sculpture, funded by the late Irwin “Ike” Belk—a UNCW donor and business executive from Charlotte—was crafted by local metal sculptor Dumay Gorham III. Hear more about the Soaring Seahawk and delve into Gorham’s creative process by watching the video.
