FirstGen Forward has announced UNCW as one of 80 new members of the FirstGen Forward Network for 2024-25 for its commitment and support of first-generation college students.
Formerly the Center for First-generation Student Success, the FirstGen Forward Network provides a three-phase approach to first-generation student success by:
- engaging and empowering higher education institutions to transform the first-generation student experience
- advancing academic and co-curricular outcomes
- building more inclusive institutional structures
429 higher education institutions from across the nation have been part of the network. Selected institutions participated in a virtual kick-off event on June 6.
“We believe that inclusion in this network is a public declaration of the university's commitment to the success of first-generation students,” said Latisha Corpening, UNCW assistant director of first generation and foster care programs. “Our goal is to continue to intentionally engage first-generation students with programs and opportunities designed to meet their needs and create a sense of belonging within the larger campus community.”
While Corpening leads the first-generation efforts, she applauds the support of the Seahawks First Working Group, comprised of individuals from Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Athletics.
The group assisted with developing a campus-wide definition of first-generation student (neither parent nor guardian has graduated from a four-year institution in the U.S.) They also provide input for programming and support the First Scholars Network application process.
Members are Maggie Bannon, Kenyetta Corley, Andi Hammond, Darron Jenkins, Wanjiku Njuguna, Menaka Raguparan, Chris Schmader, Ryan Sinnott, Michael Smith, Robyn Smith and Alex Wadsworth.
As a network member, UNCW joins a dedicated community of professionals sharing evidence-based practices and resources, troubleshooting challenges and generating knowledge to advance the success of first-generation students across the country.
