UNCW College of Health and Human Services Assistant Dean Sheri Leavens and Centro Hispano Director Edel Segovia have been selected to the fifth cohort of the University of North Carolina System’s Executive Leadership Institute, the UNC System recently announced.

They are among 33 individuals selected across the system’s 17 campuses. The Executive Leadership Institute was designed to build the next generation of top leadership within the UNC System. The 10-month program will provide an overview of the UNC System, its operations and leadership development opportunities.

"I am honored to be admitted to the fifth cohort of the System’s Executive Leadership Institute," said Leavens, who serves as CHHS assistant dean of student success and academic advising. "This opportunity will allow me to further develop my leadership skills and contribute to the growth and success of our overarching UNC system community."

"What an amazing opportunity," said Segovia. "I look forward to learning from the best, meeting amazing education professionals, and, together, making an even bigger impact on our state."

Established in 2019, the Executive Leadership Institute is designed to develop a pipeline of well-prepared, highly qualified future leaders from all institutions in the UNC System. Since the program’s inception, there have been 100 participants, of which 29 have been promoted to leadership positions within the UNC System.

“The Executive Leadership Institute is an important investment in the future,” said UNC System President Peter Hans. “We are blessed to have a large pool of brilliant and dedicated colleagues right here within the System, and it makes sense to nurture that talent, putting time and resources into developing those leaders.”

Learning modules aim to deepen executive-level expertise through five interactive, experiential immersion sessions. These will be delivered via a hybrid of virtual and in-person instruction at UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina A&T, and UNC Charlotte. Team and individual executive coaching will be provided in partnership with UNCW.
