Message from Chancellor: Update to UNC Policy

Equality Within the University of North Carolina

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

I wanted to send you an update on changes to UNC System policy about diversity and inclusion as approved by the Board of Governors today. You can read more about the board’s meetings and actions here

It will take time to determine the long-term implications of this policy change. It is important to note that we will continue our steadfast commitment to serving and supporting all students. This will not change. UNCW provides, and will continue to provide, an outstanding educational experience for Seahawks from all walks of life.

By September 1, 2024, UNCW will, as requested by the Board of Governors, submit our plans for next steps. We will work diligently over the next weeks to engage with representatives of the campus community to determine a path forward. Our goal will be to ensure that we continue to foster an environment at UNCW of respect, belonging and support for every member of the Seahawk community.

Over the past month, members of the university’s leadership team, working under my direction, began conversations about the potential impact of the policy’s proposed changes. I also met with the leadership team in the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion to hear their concerns. Now that the board has approved policy changes, the university will assess options closely and carefully. After we receive System Office guidance and finalize UNCW’s next steps, we will share an update with the campus community.

Yours in Seahawk Service,

Aswani K. Volety
UNCW Chancellor
