As the nation prepares to formally honor its veterans, UNCW is celebrating a top Military Times ranking. UNCW is ranked 19 on the “Best for Vets 2023 Colleges” list of 325 private and public institutions, making it the top-ranked North Carolina school. The list is the largest and most comprehensive ranking of schools for military service members and veterans.

Support of veterans is one of UNCW’s founding values. On Sept. 4, 1947, what was then Wilmington College opened its doors to 238 students - seventy-five percent were veterans. As Wilmington College evolved into UNCW, that support remained. Four of the institution’s ten presidents/chancellors have served; fifteen campus landmarks are named after veterans.

In September 2020, UNCW opened the 145,000-square-foot Veterans Hall, the only building on a university campus named such. It is home to the Office of Military Affairs, a support and advocacy office established in March 2016 to develop and coordinate resources for military-affiliated students - those currently serving, veterans and their family members - with academic and career goals.

In September, UNCW became an official Purple Heart Designated University for its commitment to those who have been wounded or killed by the enemy while serving to protect our freedoms. Within the annual U.S. News rankings, “Best Colleges for Veterans-National Universities” is one of the categories UNCW ranked in.

UNCW hosts an array of events, including a Veterans Day ceremony and luncheon, annually during Veterans Week. For more on UNCW’s military history see “Points of Pride.”
