The UNCW Student Veterans Organization hosted a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Monday to honor the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks—the deadliest on U.S. soil.

Students, staff and community members gathered at the flagpole on the Veterans Hall lawn for the ceremony, which included a ringing of the bell, moments of silence and remarks from SVO President Natalie Lewis and SVO Public Affairs Officer Samantha Morton.

“The SVO wanted to commemorate the countless lives that were lost on 9/11 and also acknowledge the ongoing effects it has had on our country, our military and on the world,” said Lewis. “This event helps to bridge the gap between our student veterans and the rest of the student body because many of UNCW’s current students were not even born when 9/11 happened.”

Christopher Luebke-Brown, a UNCW Department of Music lecturer, performed "Taps" to end the ceremony, which was followed by a roundtable discussion in the Office of Military Affairs. The following SVO students participated: Deon Wren, SVO communications officer; Matt Ryan, graduate student; Dusty Sanders, SVO vice president; and Lewis.

“We wanted to create awareness by opening up about our experiences during and after 9/11 in the hopes that we will all never forget,” Lewis added.
