Notice: UNCW Alert System Maintenance/Testing June 6-8

The UNCW Office of Environmental Health and Safety, University Police and the Office of University Relations routinely test the UNCW Alert system to familiarize the campus community with emergency notification procedures as well as for system maintenance.

UNCW is scheduled to test its outdoor alert system June 6-8. From June 6-7 short bursts, “growling,” and/or speaker system messaging from the sirens may be audible. Activation of other alerting tools will not occur during this time.

A quarterly full volume test will take place at noon on June 8. The full-volume test will be accompanied by activation of other alerting tools. This is only a test. No action from the campus or community is needed. UNCW Alert emergency notification system communication tools include:

• Warning Siren System
• UNCW homepage and social media channels
• Campus emails
• UNCW Alert text messages and calls
• Pop-up notifications on university-owned computers

UNCW has three active campus locations in New Hanover County – S. College Road (main campus), Myrtle Grove (Center for Marine Studies) and Wrightsville Beach. To protect students, faculty, and staff at these locations, the UNCW siren will sound the alert tone for a tornado warning affecting any part of New Hanover County. The alert tone will sound every 30 minutes while the warning is active. An all-clear tone will sound when the warning is over.

All students, faculty and staff will receive text alert s and telephone messages. Members of the community, including parents and families, who have registered for emergency text alert s will also receive the test messages. Student phone numbers are automatically registered to receive UNCW Alert emergency notifications through voice and text messages. Students should log in to SeaNet to review or update their contact numbers. UNCW strongly encourages students to verify contact information is up to date to ensure they are always automatically contacted in the event of an emergency.

Faculty and Staff Notifications

University employees receive UNCW Alert emergency notifications via voice calls and text messages. Emergency contact information is confidential and used only for emergency notification and periodic system testing. In an actual emergency, messages may be received at any time of day or night. Standard text messaging fees may apply, but there are no additional charges from the university.

To ensure you are receiving UNCW Alert messages:

• Go to mySeaport > Employee Essentials > SeaNet.
• Under the “Personal Information” tab, there is an option to “View Address(es) and Phone(s)”.
• To provide or update a phone number do so under the “Update Address(es) and Phone(s)” option.
