UNCW Students to Broaden Their Horizons Through Gilman Scholarships

Monday, March 08, 2021

UNCW has two additional recipients of the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Five previous UNCW recipients were announced in September 2020.

Named in honor of the late New York congressman Benjamin A. Gilman, the scholarship program provides up to $5,000 for students to study abroad or participate in international internships.

International studies major Shelby Keiko Davis ’21 initially intended to use the scholarship money to offset costs associated with studying abroad at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan. Due to COVID-19, the program was changed to a virtual study abroad experience.

While bittersweet that she can’t physically travel to Japan, Davis is creating friendships and memories through the Intercultural Engagement Program, a virtual platform for international and local KGU students.

Recipient Madison Stump ’24 plans to study in South Korea to learn more about the country’s culture and eventually the language.
