UNCW Mourns the Loss of Former Music Faculty Member Sherrill Martin

It is with sadness that UNCW shares the news of the passing of Sherrill Virginia Martin on Dec. 1, 2020.

Martin joined the UNCW faculty in 1979, teaching music history, research in music, piano and coordinating the bachelor’s in music program. She played a major role in the development of the UNCW Department of Music in the 1980s and 90s. During her tenure at UNCW, she was awarded the UNCW Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award; the UNCW Distinguished Teaching Professorship Award; the Board of Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and was twice nominated as UNCW’s Carnegie Professor of the Year.

The author of numerous essays and two books, she was commissioned by the Yale University Music Library to complete a third book. She served as the national musicology editor for American Music Teacher; the national book review editor for the Journal of the Society for American Music and lectured throughout the United States, Europe and Japan.
