“Periods Don’t Stop for Pandemics”: UNCW Alumna Addresses Global Issue Locally
Tuesday, July 14, 2020
Mary Claire Curran ’11 realized that “periods don’t stop for pandemics” and organized a donation drive to collect feminine hygiene products for those struggling to afford them.
Partnering with Hawk’s Harvest, as well as the nonprofit I Support the Girls, a team of volunteers collected donations and distributed them to those in need throughout Wilmington. With designated drop-off locations as well as an online option, the campaign brought in approximately 30,000 donations in one week.
Having previously collaborated with the I Support the Girls, Curran became aware of “period poverty,” a global issue affecting those who don't have access to safe, hygienic sanitary products.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has created a greater need for menstrual hygiene supplies – if you thought not having toilet paper was bad, imagine not having access to any menstrual hygiene products,” she said.
Curran, a UNCW NYC Alumni Steering Committee member, said she views her efforts to organize the drive as a homage to the late UNCW Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Pat Leonard and is planning on another one next spring.
