Tarana Burke, Vivian Howard and Nyle DiMarco to Headline UNCW Leadership Lecture Series

Monday, August 19, 2019

“Me too” movement founder and social justice activist Tarana Burke, chef and author Vivian Howard and activist and actor Nyle DiMarco will be the speakers for the 2019-20 Leadership Lecture Series at UNCW.

The Leadership Lecture Series, sponsored by Campus Life Arts & Programs, provides an exploration of leadership through stories and experiences shared by guest speakers.

“I try very hard to put together a series that is cross-disciplinary and wide-reaching,” said Stephanie Norris, director of Campus Life Arts and Programs. “Each of these speakers have a lot of layers to them and their stories. My hope is that students can see themselves in the series, and challenge themselves to be exposed to different perspectives or learn about something new.”

Tarana Burke will kick off the series on Sept. 24, 2019. She will share the story behind the #metoo campaign, which has emerged as a rallying cry for people who have survived sexual assault and sexual harassment. Burke is the senior director of programs at Girls for Gender Equity and has dedicated more than 25 years to social justice.

Vivian Howard will speak on Oct. 30, 2019. Born in Deep Run, NC, Howard learned early on to appreciate the ebb and flow of eating with the seasons. In 2005, she and her husband, Ben Knight, decided to open a farm-to-fork restaurant in Kinston, NC. Over the past eight years, Howard has developed strong relationships with local farmers, making it possible to source more than 70% of the restaurant’s food from within 60 miles. The award-winning chef is a four-time semifinalist for James Beard Foundation Best Chef Southeast and winner of the James Beard Foundation Best Television Personality.

Nyle DiMarco will close the lecture series on Feb. 18, 2020. Born into a multigenerational deaf family, he is an honorary spokesperson for Language Equality and Acquisition for Deaf Kids and founder of the Nyle DiMarco Foundation, which works to improve the lives of deaf people around the world. With a passion for language, literacy and advocacy within the deaf community and beyond, DiMarco shares his barrier-breaking story as a deaf man who has risen above stereotypes. DiMarco was a winner of "Dancing with the Stars" and "America’s Next Top Model."

Lectures will be held in the Burney Center on the UNCW campus. Tickets will be available in Sharky's Box Office and Game Room beginning Wednesday, Aug. 21. Tickets are free for Tarana Burke and Nyle DiMarco lectures. Tickets for Vivian Howard are $15 for the general public and free for faculty, staff and students.
