Thursday, July 18, 2019

The University of North Carolina Wilmington has welcomed two new members, Mr. Michael Lee and Dr. Yousry Sayed, to its Board of Trustees. Lee and Sayed will serve terms through 2023.

Appointed by Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger, Mr. Lee is a former member of the North Carolina State Senate. He attended UNCW, and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his law degree with honors from Wake Forest University School of Law. Mr. Lee remains active in government and policy as a member of the 2019 cohort of Hunt-Kean Leadership Fellows. Prior to his service in the NC Senate, he served on the NC Board of Transportation and chaired the NC Ports Authority Board of Directors.

Appointed by the UNC Board of Governors, Dr. Sayed is a former UNCW administrator and a longtime faculty member (chemistry and biochemistry), student mentor and campus volunteer. He received the Chancellor's Teaching Excellence Award in 1993. Dr. Sayed founded Wilmington-based Quality Chemical Laboratories in 1998 and serves as its president and CEO.

“Mr. Lee and Dr. Sayed will be outstanding additions to our Board of Trustees,” Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli said. “Their roles as dedicated public servants set a terrific example for our students in terms of being actively engaged in the community. I look forward to working with them, and the rest of our stellar board, to achieve our collective goals as outlined in UNCW’s Strategic Plan.”

The Board of Trustees will swear in new officers tomorrow, July 19, during its quarterly meeting.
