Aswani Volety, dean of the UNCW College of Arts and Sciences, has accepted the position of Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Elon University, effective Sept. 1.

“This is, of course, an excellent next step in Aswani’s already impressive career, but it is a tremendous loss for our campus and our community,” said Provost Marilyn Sheerer, who recognized Volety for “his service and the countless ways he has made UNCW a better place.”

Since joining the UNCW in 2014, Volety has made significant contributions to the university’s culture, ability to serve students and support faculty, and growth as an institution. His most notable accomplishments include the enhancement of professional development opportunities for faculty and staff, as a means to increasing retention; the creation and implementation, with his colleagues, of several new academic programs that will help meet regional economic needs; shaping and leadership of the marine science enterprise; relationship-building efforts with international universities to expand global partnerships; and the creation of the Dean’s Student Leadership Council to give students a voice in the college’s governance. Volety has also been dedicated to donor relations, which, among other things, led to the establishment of the Visiting Artist and Scholar Program this past spring.

UNCW will announce an interim dean and begin a national search to fill the position as soon as possible.
