Shaw, Aguilar Recognized for Community Contributions by YWCA

UNCW administrator Sheri Shaw and student Jessica Aguilar ’20 took home honors from the 34th YWCA Annual Women of Achievement Awards. Winners were announced May 7 at the Wilmington Convention Center. 

The awards celebrate the outstanding contributions and achievements of women and young leaders active in Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover and Pender counties. Nine women affiliated with UNCW were among this year’s 71 nominees. Louise Coggins, chair of the College of Health and Human Services Dean’s Advancement Council, was honored with the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award at the event as well.

“I am so proud of Sheri, Jessica and Louise,” said Charles Hardy, CHHS dean. “These are three amazing people who are doing amazing things to bring about positive social change in our community. The entire CHHS family salutes these wonderful professionals.”

Shaw, assistant dean for student success in the CHHS, was honored in the category of education, while social work major Aguilar was a recipient of a Student Impact Grant.

Since 2016, Shaw has provided academic and leadership support to CHHS’ undergraduate and graduate students while overseeing the CHHS Student Success Center.

Aguilar is the first recipient of the YWCA Student Impact Grant. This grant gives $1,500 to a deserving student to further the lives of women and minorities The child of immigrants, she is involved with community organizations Juntos 4H in Pender County; Habitat for Humanity; the YWCA Reach afterschool program and UNCW’s MI CASA high school mentoring program.
