Supporting Students in Recovery: UNCW Receives UNC System Grant

Wednesday, March 13, 2019

The University of North Carolina Wilmington has received a $105,000 grant from the UNC System to continue funding a program that supports students in recovery.

The Collegiate Recovery Community project, CRC Hawks, provides a supportive atmosphere for UNCW students in recovery from alcohol, drug or gambling addiction; needing recovery; or affected by another person’s addiction. The grant will be used to further develop the program, promote recovery awareness and reduce addiction stigma on campus. Funding for the grant is provided through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“We continue to be grateful to DHHS and the UNC System office for the opportunity to be a part of the Collegiate Recovery Community project,” said Katrin Wesner-Harts, director of the Abrons Student Health Center. “Crossroads and the CRC project work to reduce the stigma surrounding recovery through events such as Recovery Month in September and programs such as Seahawk Strength and Hope several times a semester, where we feature the story of a UNCW community member affected by addiction.”

Enabling and nurturing a sense of a student-centered community by enhancing student support programs is a priority outlined in the university’s Strategic Plan.

The Crossroads Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention & Education Program, which is a part of the Student Health Center, founded CRC Hawks in August 2013 after an extensive needs assessment. For more information about CRC Hawks or to be added to the program’s weekly email, call 910.962.4135.
