UNCW, NC Division of Forest Resources Plan Controlled Burns
Monday, February 11, 2019
The University of North Carolina Wilmington is working with the North Carolina Forest Service to conduct controlled burns on parts of two of UNCW’s properties:
- An approximately five-acre tract of the Ev-Henwood Nature Preserve in Brunswick County between Feb.11 and 28.
- Approximately 25-30 acres of UNCW’s main campus between Feb. 18 and March 8.
The university will post the confirmed dates to the UNCW homepage as soon as they are available, as well as a reminder the day before the planned burn, conditions permitting.
In addition to the ecological benefits for forests, as longleaf pine forests are fire-dependent ecosystems, controlled burns are designed to decrease the chances of hazardous wildfires by reducing accumulated litter, which fuels wildfires.
The sight and smell of smoke may be detectable from neighboring areas during the burn. Safety controls will be in place to minimize these conditions as much as possible. Questions may be directed to UNCW Landscaping at 910.962.3107.
