Wednesday, April 18, 2018
A UNCW communication studies production showcasing the university’s First-Year Study Abroad program at Maynooth University in Ireland received a “BEA Award of Excellence” during the annual Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Festival of Media Arts.
"One-hundred Thousand Welcomes: The UNCW-Maynooth FYSA Program" was among seven productions acknowledged in the mixed/pedagogical category for the Faculty Film & Video Competition in which the faculty member had a dominant role in the creative direction of the project. More than 1,540 entries representing 175 colleges and universities were submitted for numerous categories in this year’s competition.
UNCW communication studies associate professor Bill Bolduc, Trahern MacLean '15 and 11 students traveled to Ireland in October 2016 to film the production. The video highlights the study abroad immersion program and the wonders of Ireland through a UNCW freshman’s experience. Bolduc and Robert Seagle, a technical assistant in communication studies, attended the awards ceremony at the BEA annual convention in Las Vegas on April 8.
“It was very exciting for my student team and me to be acknowledged for the work we did on this video,” said Bolduc. “Traveling to Ireland to film was spectacular on its own merit. For us to gain the acknowledgement of media educators and producers from across the country is really a proud moment. The judges indicated that they were particularly impressed with the beauty of our videography.”
The BEA Festival of Media Arts is an international refereed exhibition of faculty creative activities and a national showcase for student work. The Broadcast Education Association is the premiere international academic media organization, driving insights, excellence in media production and career advancement for educators, students and professionals. The association has more than 2,500 individual and institutional members worldwide.
