Tuesday, February 27, 2018

UNCW won big at the North Carolina College Media Association Conference held Feb. 24 on the campus of North Carolina State University. Submissions from the student newspaper The Seahawk, creative magazine Atlantis, and honors college arts and literature journal Second Story Journal took home nine awards as well as two honorable mentions.

The Seahawk garnered multiple awards, including Best of Show for online news as well as first place in news writing, first and third place in feature writing, and an honorable mention for an opinion piece.

“In a time where news is constantly under fire, I am proud of the writers and editors who continue to seek out and write meaningful stories,” said Casey McAnarney, editor-in-chief of The Seahawk.

Atlantis also won big, nabbing first place in the categories of poetry, nonfiction and photography and art.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the Atlantis editors for selecting such beautiful pieces, the layout editor for designing such an eye-catching and creative spread, and for our contributors for writing and photographing these pieces,” said Atlantis Editor-in-Chief Carey Shook. “It’s an amazing feeling to say that Atlantis is an award-winning magazine again.”

In addition, Second Story Journal received first place in the fiction category as well as an honorable mention in poetry.

“I am excited to see how much Second Story Journal has grown over the last few years into an award-winning literary magazine,” said Caleb Horowitz, editor-in-chief. “I can’t wait to watch Second Story Journal continue to grow and evolve.”
