WEATHER UPDATE: Campus Is Open, Classes Will Resume as Scheduled on Monday, Jan. 8
Saturday, January 06, 2018
5:05 p.m., Jan. 6, 2018
UNCW has officially reopened for weekend activities, including freshman orientation (Sunday at 9 a.m.), and for the resumption of classes as scheduled on Monday, Jan. 8.
The university will continue to operate under the "Adverse Weather Policy: Condition 2" until Sunday at 9 a.m. As of 9 a.m. on Sunday, and until 12 p.m. on Monday, the university will operate under Condition 1 of the Adverse Weather Policy. Employees should consult the policy and make the decision that is best for them, and consult with their managers as needed.
The full policy can be found here: https://uncw.edu/hr/documents/UNCWAdverseWeatherGuidelines.pdf.
All residence halls are now open. However, students are strongly advised not to return to campus until Sunday, ideally during daylight hours, to ensure as much progress as possible has been made on campus and on regional roadways. Although employees continue to work diligently on clearing campus walkways and roads, there will remain spots that are icy and/or slick, particularly those in shaded areas, until temperatures begin to climb in earnest on Monday. Students, employees and visitors should exercise extreme caution in traveling on foot and by vehicle on and around campus.
As conditions may vary across the region and no one weather bulletin will apply to everyone, please remember that each of us is responsible for our own decisions, actions and safety. As always, students should make the travel and safety decisions that are best for them and should not travel if they believe it to be unsafe. UNCW instructors have proven to be reasonable and considerate about students' travel concerns, and we do not anticipate any issues for students who are not able to make it back to campus for Monday. Students should reach out to instructors to discuss this as needed.
When driving on roads affected by this weather event, please carry a paper map and cash; stay alert; avoid cell phone use; leave early to allow for additional travel time; reduce speed; increase following distance; and be patient.

Although we do not anticipate the need for another message regarding this weather event, students, faculty and staff should continue to monitor their campus email inboxes. Thank you for your continued attention.
