Free, Qualified Income Tax Assistance Offered by UNCW Accounting Students

Monday, February 13, 2017

The UNCW Cameron School of Business is again offering free tax preparation services as part of the Internal Revenue Service-sponsored program Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.

Across the nation, VITA provides low- and moderate-income individuals and families with assistance through IRS-certified volunteers. At UNCW, the program is staffed by accounting students who have taken appropriate courses, completed training and passed IRS certification exams.

UNCW has participated in VITA since 2000. With preparing students for post-graduation success and community engagement at the heart of UNCW’s Strategic Plan, the opportunity to provide free, qualified tax assistance is a win-win for the students and the community.

“In addition to applying what they have learned in the classroom, the students pick up communication skills that will prove valuable for the rest of their careers,” said Victoria J. Hansen, associate professor of accounting.

For the current filing season, the VITA program at UNCW is available to those who earn less than $64,000 annually. Those who qualify can prepare and electronically file their federal and up to three state income tax returns using the tax software provided.

Taxpayers seeking assistance should bring their social security card, photo identification, tax documents, and if possible, a copy of their 2015 returns.

UNCW’s VITA services will be available at the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship located at 803-G S. College Road. Walk-in hours are:
