Michael Wilhelm, associate vice chancellor for international programs, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the American International Recruitment Council. The council, which has 375 member institutions in the U.S. and abroad, establishes quality and ethical standards for recruiting international students.
“UNCW has placed a strong emphasis on expanding its global focus,” said Provost Marilyn Sheerer. “In his leadership role, Michael will be actively involved in setting standards for student recruitment, while his interaction with other AIRC members will continue to raise the university’s profile as an excellent choice for international students seeking to study in the United States.”
Global engagement is a key priority in UNCW’s 2016-21 Strategic Plan. The Office of International Programs is working to increase the number of international students on campus as well as encourage more UNCW students to study abroad. Wilhelm’s duties as a board member will include participating in monthly board meetings, giving workshops and presentations for institutional members and planning the annual conference.
“It’s a big investment for the entire family when these students choose to come to the U.S.,” Wilhelm said. “AIRC accredits and helps identify recruiting organizations that adhere to professional standards, which helps safeguard the interests of both international students and the institutions that enroll them.”
AIRC was founded in 2008 by senior U.S. education leaders. It is the only membership organization that independently certifies recruitment agencies using a rigorous accreditation model.
