UNCW implemented program codes on student records starting the week of August 4, 2025. Program codes allow for simpler updates to and management of learner records (including change of student major) and clearer reporting across campus. The Office of the Registrar worked with Ellucian and ITS on this project to ensure smooth implementation and roll out of the codes. Our campus previously used “degree strings” which will now go away. Each degree string has been converted to a program code that will represent one major, with a few exceptions.
The program code will provide specific information and appears as [College Code]-[Degree Code]-[Major Code (or part of Major Code)]. The parent program code will be used for each version of the major offered by UNCW.
For example, the undergraduate Nursing parent program (HH-BSN-NSG) holds:
- CAA-NSG (incoming students who have not yet declared in the Center for Academic Advising) - 1NNS
- Pre-NSG (students declared in the pre-major) – PNSG
- NSG (students fully declared in the major) - NSG
- Pre-NSG Ext (students declared in the pre-major, extension campus) - XPRN
- NSG Ext (students fully declared in the major, extension campus) – XRNS
- Accelerated BSN - ANSG
As part of this project, the “extension colleges” will be phased out, and the new program codes will now be kept under the umbrella of the parent program. There will be one parent program code for Undergraduate Non-Degree Seeking and Graduate Non-Degree Seeking students. In most cases, major codes will remain the same, and reports using them will not need to change, nor will new reports be created immediately. These changes will provide greater clarity in working with student records and information.
With assistance from ITS, Ellucian, and campus partners, we have worked with units across campus to ensure that units are prepared for the shift. This includes Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate Admissions, Institutional Research, ITS, Center for Academic Advising, Council of Advising Directors, Student Accounts, and Registrar’s Office.
