The Laser Safety Program at UNCW protects employees, students, and visitors from the hazards of laser systems on site. It is based on guidance in ANSI Z136 series of Standards for the Safe Use of Lasers, and the applicable federal and state regulations. The program's primary objective is to prevent exposure of the human eye or skin to laser radiation more than the Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE). Lasers on UNCW campuses consist of all classes. EH&S puts an emphasis on Class 3 and 4 lasers and provides guidance for proper use, disposal, transfer, and incident prevention. The program was formalized and adopted by the Radiation Safety Committee in 2022.
