Dr. Curtis holds three degrees in piano performance, a Bachelor of Music from Southern Methodist University, a Master of Music from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The University of Texas at Austin. Currently the Director of Music Ministries at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and Adjunct Faculty accompanist at the University of North Carolina/ Wilmington, she has held faculty positions at The University of Texas at Austin, Baylor University, Howard Payne University and The University of Texas at San Antonio.

After moving to North Carolina from Texas in 1996, Dr. Curtis' teaching career turned to public school teaching and incorporated West African drumming. She wrote several grants to bring in West African musicians for after-school workshops on singing, drumming, dancing, and building African drums. In 2008, the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries sent her to Ivory Coast, Africa where she taught improvisation, piano, conducting, and theory to future worship leaders. Dr. Curtis has established a Choral Scholar program at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church which provides several UNCW vocal students with increased performance opportunities.
