Active Military Members

At UNCW, we consider all those who have served or who are currently serving in any component of the U.S. Armed Forces to be military-affiliated students. Sometimes, we use the term "student veterans" to encompass all stages of military careers, from those who are serving on active duty, to those who have separated or retired from military service, and to those who are part of a Reserve or National Guard unit.

We are proud to report that all branches of military service--Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, Army National Guard and Air National Guard--have representation in the current UNCW student population. Some of our students are local and spend time in the Military Resource Lounge when on campus, while others are distance education students stationed around the world.

UNCW offers the following benefits to students who are currently serving in the military:

As a military-affiliated student at UNCW, you are always welcome to use the resources available in the Military Resource Lounge (think free snacks and coffee, a microwave and refrigerator, computer access and free printing, plus comfy places to spread out and do homework).

You'll also be part of the Military-affiliated Student Listserv, a weekly email newsletter that keeps you up-to-date on military community events, both on campus and off; scholarship opportunities, many of which are designated specifically for military members who are currently serving; internship and job listings; and UNCW support services.

Military students are welcomed as members of the Student Veterans Organization, a national chapter of Student Veterans of America.

Military students who are interested in online programs at UNCW may choose from undergraduate degrees that are totally online, as well as online master's degrees or graduate certificates and licensure programs

Testing Services

UNCW offers testing services at the Camp Lejeune Base Education Center; tests include the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and Defense Activity for Non-traditional Educational Support (DANTES) Standardized Subject Tests (DSSTs), which can replace college credit for certain courses with a single test. Testing is free for active duty and reserve service members, and testing services are also available for veterans and civilians.

In other words, you could take a test in a standard college subject for free and have it count toward general education college credits, saving you time and allowing you to get to the required coursework for your major earlier in your college career. Learn more about CLEP and DANTES testing at Camp Lejeune, including how to register for tests.
