Join MarineQuest as we explore the exciting fields of marine technology and coastal environmental engineering. Tour the Battleship North Carolina with marine engineers, and discover why gyroscopes are necessary on a ship. Assemble and operate working ROVs to explore under water. Engineer a simple hydrophone to listen to the sounds of the sea. Travel by boat to a dredge spoil island and learn how coastal engineers keep our waterways open.  Compare a dredge spoil island to a barrier island through GPS data collection.  Investigate the effectiveness of natural and artificial barriers that engineers use to protect our coastlines. This camp is designed to engineer ocean tech fun!

Field excursions include:

  • Exploring coastal habitats by kayak; Take field trips to the beach, marsh, fouling communities, Center for Marine Science, Battleship North Carolina, and other marine locations.

Highlights include:

  • Visit coastal islands by boat; discover the sounds under the sea as you build your own hydrophone; use waterproof drop cameras to survey the diversity around fouling communities; participate in boogie board oceanography and collect physical data, shallow water snorkeling and more…
