Half-Day Instructor

Half-Day Instructors will work with our youngest students during their first introduction to marine science. Half-Day campers range in age from 4 to 7 years-old. Please read over the duties, qualifications, and terms of employment below and review the program topic descriptions for these engaging and fun science experiences. Duties:

  1. Provide "hands-on, feet-wet" instruction for campers age 4-7
  2. Supervise campers in classroom, in field, and during snack
  3. Provide first aid to campers
  4. Behavior management
  5. General clean up and maintenance of camp

Qualifications:

  1. Must be able to lead and participate in outdoor learning experiences (rain or shine)
  2. Must have strong oral communication skills to communicate effectively with campers, parents, and staff
  3. Must demonstrate initiative and leadership qualities
  4. Must have previous experience and desire to work with young children
  5. Preference is for candidates who are in a degree program related to the marine sciences or elementary education. Minimum requirement is one year towards a bachelor's degree.
  6. Knowledge of local marine habitats is a plus
  7. CPR/First Aid is required (must be obtained by June 1, 2018)
  8. Lifeguard Certification is preferred

Terms of Employment:

  1. June 1 through August 3, Monday through Friday
  2. Mandatory staff training during the weeks of June 1 through June 8
  3. Average work week is 22.5 hours, from 7:45am-12:15pm
  4. Pay rate starts at $8.50/hr, dependent on qualifications
  5. Employment is subject to a criminal and Homeland Security background check

Small Fry (Ages 4-5) - 3 Positions

Small Fry Instructors will guide our youngest MarineQuesters (ages 4-5) through a literary journey of the fish life cycle.  Read books, teach lessons, and go on field trips with these enthusiastic youngsters.  It is preferred that candidates for our 4-5 year old programs have experience working with Pre-K students and a strong passion for marine science.   

NOTE: Small Fry instructors will also lead Sea SibsSeussical Sea Science, and ArtSea Mini (with assistance of art staff)

Sea Squirts (Ages 5-6) - 2 Positions

Sea Squirts instructors will develop the scientist in our 5-6 year old students in this stimulating half-day program. You will guide them through an investigation of "ickyology," ie the study of invertebrate zoology. It is critical that interested applicants have a strong marine invertebrate zoology background and the ability to simplify subject matter. The program will include field trips to the beach, marsh, fouling station, Center for Marine Science and NC Aquarium to reinforce lessons.

Sea Safari (Ages 6-7) - 2 Positions

Sea Safari instructors will be the safari guide for our half day 6-7 year old program. On safari you will lead explorers through the different coastal habitats and the vertebrate organisms that call it home. It is critical that instructors for this program are familiar with coastal habitats and have a strong vertebrate zoology background, particularly related to marine species. The program will include field trips to the beach, marsh, fouling station, Center for Marine Science and NC Aquarium.

Note: Throughout the summer we offer single gender camps for children. During those weeks, the instructors from Sea Squirts and Sea Safari will be selected to work with Mermaids (girls) or Sea Dawgs (boys).
