Welcome to MarineQuest!

MarineQuest is the official marine science outreach program for the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Watson College of Education, and the Center for Marine Science providing young people with opportunities to explore, discover and value our marine habitats. Whether you experience MarineQuest as a summer camper exploring the ocean or as a student on a school field trip discovering the marsh, the outcome is the same: MarineQuest is more than just another day at the beach; MarineQuest is making waves in environmental education!

Upcoming 2020 Fall Online Programs

LiteraSEA Live (Ages 3-6):  Join MarineQuest as we make books come alive with curiosity, creativity and our unique curriculum. Each program will feature a marine science topic we will explore together while reading specially selected children's books, interpreting stories, conducting hands-on STEM investigations, and creating interesting and useful arts and crafts.

Example includes reading Eric Carle’s Mister Seahorse and creating habitats that provide camouflage.

Ocean Explorers (Ages 7-10):  This adventure into the five fields of marine science is perfect for elementary-aged students. Discover what a day in the life of a marine chemist, geologist, biologist, technologist and physical oceanographer entails! Explore marine organisms and their habitats. Each session will feature hands-on STEM activities students conduct like real scientists.

Example includes building a working submarine to replicate undersea exploration.

Ocean Voyagers (Ages 11-13):  This expedition is great for middle school students who want to dive deeper into the fields of marine science and build their scientific toolbox. Explore the tools and skills scientists use to study the marine environment. Take a closer look at how marine scientists collect and analyze their samples. Each session will include hands-on STEM activities.

Example includes constructing a miniature wave tank to study the impacts of coastal weathering and erosion.

Ocean Researchers (High School Age Students):  Want to learn how to conduct scientific research on the marine environment? Ocean Researchers will take high school students through the scientific method, as we explore the diverse fields of marine science. Students will discover tools marine scientists use to conduct research and practice reviewing scientific literature. This program includes the opportunity for students to conduct their own small research study.

FAMS (Minimum age 6 years-old):  The family that explores together, discovers together! Grab your kids and join MarineQuest for a family adventure in marine science at FAMS. Each family-friendly event will provide opportunities for families to explore different topics in marine science through hands-on STEM activities. This three-program series will take place virtually on Saturday mornings once a month from 9:30-11:00 am.

Fall 2020 dates are September 26th, October 24th, and November 21st.

My daughter Tess loved everything about her experience at MarineQuest... It was clear not only that she enjoyed your program, but that she learned an extraordinary amount. -Deborah B, parent
