Marianella Jara is a native of Costa Rica. She completed her undergraduate studies in Political Science and International Relations at Louisiana State University as a Fulbright scholar. She received two M.A. degrees in Liberal Arts in the areas of Hispanic Studies and Spanish. Ms. Jara teaches courses in elementary and intermediate Spanish. In 2014, she was recognized with The Lecturer of the Year Award for excellence in teaching and service. She has also earned the Excellence in Teaching award in various occasions. She is passionate about studying abroad and plays a vital role in the implementation and promotion of study abroad programs at UNCW. She has directed and co-directed several study abroad programs. She is an academic advisor for University College and has collaborated teaching courses in other departments such as Watson School of Education and the University and Honors Colleges. As an Honors instructor, she has created seminars on the subjects of The Arab culture in Spain and Costa Rican culture, biodiversity and ecotourism. Currently, she is developing a new seminar titled: "Cruising the Cultures of the Mediterranean". More recently, she started teaching online and greatly enjoys using technology to enhance teaching and student learning. In addition, Ms. Jara is the Spanish Club Advisor and regularly supports the local Hispanic community through community service and by encouraging students to help through different organizations. In her free time, she teaches English as a second language to Hispanic immigrants, enjoys reading, traveling, cooking, outdoor activities and spending time with her beloved husband Jeremy and daughter Paz Angelica.
