Where are they Wednesdays: Stories of UNCW Spanish Alumni

Liz Henry Class of 1999, Spanish BA

Why did you study Spanish?

I knew I wanted to major in Spanish and visited the school and its Spanish department. I was very impressed with the small size and attentive teachers.

How do you use Spanish now?

I got a teaching certificate and a Master's degree from University of Denver and spent ten years teaching and working for an educational nonprofit. I taught native Spanish speakers and used my language skills daily with students and their families. My family and I then moved to Puerto Rico for a year where I worked managing a local farmer's market, speaking mostly Spanish with the vendors. Shortly after my return from PR, I started a travel company, in part inspired by my time abroad while in college. I sell active and adventure travel around the world. . This also gives me a way to keep practicing my Spanish skills. As a volunteer, I also work with a couple of local Spanish-speaking families to help them navigate the school system and translate communications they receive from the school.
