Where are they Wednesdays: Stories of UNCW Spanish Alumni

Lindsay McDonald Class of 2017, Spanish BA

Why did you study Spanish?

I studied Spanish because I was passionate about helping and working within the immigrant population in the United States - specifically with children.

How do you use Spanish now?

Right now, I currently am employed as a paraeducator in Maryland, where I work specifically with the ESOL students at my school. The majority of our ESOL population are children that have recently come to the United States from Honduras or El Salvador. They often have minimal formal education and/or severely interrupted schooling. My Spanish has been a blessing, as a lot of the children have gone through traumatic experiences immigrating to the United States, and then they are thrown into a school system where they cannot communicate. I use my Spanish to help them communicate with their English-speaking teachers, and to help acclimate them and provide a sense of comfort during their transition process to English based schooling. I am currently enrolled in grad school to get my Masters in Education so that I may become a certified ESOL teacher, and so that I may continue working with our children that are immigrants within our country!
