Stories of UNCW Spanish Alumni
Laura Pica
Class of 2014, Spanish BA
Why did you study Spanish?
I spoke Spanish at home with my family but I wanted to improve my language skills and become proficient in reading and writing. I always knew I wanted to use my Spanish professionally so that I could reach as many people as possible and give back to my community. I have also always loved learning about other countries, people, cultures, languages and majoring in Spanish allowed me to explore those interests as well.
How do you use Spanish now?
I get to use my Spanish every day. I am a social worker at MedNorth Health Center where I get to practice therapy and do case management. At the moment, I am the only Spanish speaking therapist in the clinic; I get to work with children and adults. I work in an integrated healthcare setting so I have the opportunity to support our Spanish speaking patients navigate the healthcare system and reach their physical and mental health goals. I also use my Spanish at home, with my family.
