Stories of UNCW Spanish Alumni
Edelmira Segovia
Class of 1998, Spanish BA
Class of 2012, Leadership & Administration EdD
Why did you study Spanish?
Studying Spanish at UNCW reconnected me with my roots. I emigrated to Wilmington as a child and it wasn’t until I took Spanish classes, particularly the literature classes, that I reconnected with pieces of my heritage after being suddenly uprooted from my home country of Perú.
How do you use Spanish now?
I am Director of Centro Hispano and Co-Chair the Latino Alliance, both at UNCW. I use Spanish to better connect with the populations I serve. Whether students, parents, or community at large, all of us connect through the immigrant experience, and through a shared native or second language, in this case, Spanish.
