Stories of UNCW Spanish Alumni
Ashli Gibson
Class of 2008, Spanish BA
Why did you study Spanish?
I studied abroad in Chile with professor Valerie Rider with the intention of minoring in Spanish. After that trip, my love for the language and culture was ignited and I decided to pursue a major in Spanish.
How do you use Spanish now?
I am a Certified Nurse-Midwife at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. In addition to providing prenatal care and attending births in Wilmington, I also provide well-woman and prenatal care at the Brunswick County Health Department. I work with a large Spanish-speaking population there and love using my Spanish regularly. Pursuing a degree in Spanish actually led me to my current career. My first job after graduating was translating at the local Planned Parenthood. I worked under a midwife there and discovered my passion for women's health. I am incredibly grateful for all the opportunities that my education in Spanish has provided to me.
