Scholarships

How to Apply

To be considered for the scholarships described below:

  • Go to mySeaport
  • Select the Academics Tab
  • Select “Apply for Scholarships” from the Student Services menu options

Upon completing the application, students will automatically be entered into consideration for all scholarships for which they are eligible.

Lapaire-Stites French Studies Scholarship

The Lapaire-Stites French Studies Scholarship was created by Dr. Pierre J. Lapaire and Mrs. Inge Stites to honor the 70 plus years of combined service to UNCW of Mr. Kenneth Stites, former assistant professor of French, Mrs. Inge Stites, former lecturer of French and German, and Dr. PJ Lapaire, professor of French.

One scholarship of $500.00 is awarded to students majoring in French for academic excellence in French. See side panel for application information and eligibility.

Department of World Languages and Cultures Academic Scholarship

The Department of World Languages and Cultures Academic Scholarship was created by the faculty and staff of the Department of World Languages and Cultures.

One scholarship of $500.00 is awarded to students who demonstrate special ability in the area of foreign language study and overall academic excellence. Preference is given to declared majors of a world language, but any student enrolled in a world language course is eligible. See side panel for application information and eligibility.

Helena R. Cheek Scholarship

The Helena Riker Cheek Memorial Scholarship is given in memory of Helena R. Cheek by her family and friends.

Two scholarships of $1,175 are awarded to students majoring in a world language (French, German, or Spanish) who demonstrate special ability in the area of world language study and overall academic excellence. See side panel for application information and eligibility.

Text Book Scholarship

Two scholarships of $125.00 are awarded to students majoring in a world language (French, German, or Spanish) who demonstrate special ability in the area of world language study and overall academic excellence. See side panel for application information and eligibility.

The Wilmington Coca-Cola Scholarship Fund (not offered each year)

The Wilmington Coca-Cola Scholarship Fund is intended to provide assistance to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in the humanities. Recipients are selected based on character and leadership. Consideration is also given to candidates who have shown evidence of self-help. Two scholarships of $700 are awarded in a five year rotation between English, History, World Languages and Cultures, and Philosophy and Religion. Nieka "Sean" Wright Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established to honor UNCW alumnus Nieka "Sean" Wright (M.A. 2011) and his commitment to higher education and the study of world languages. Recipients must be full-time students in the M.A. in Spanish program at UNCW. The award will be based on academic merit with a secondary consideration of financial need.

The Edward and Esther Bloedorn Endowment Fund

The Edward and Esther Bloedorn Endowment Fund was created by donor Philip E. Bloedorn in honor of his parents, Edward and Esther. The recipient must have declared a major in the department of World Languages and Cultures. A preference will be given to students with either a major or minor in German. The scholarship is considered a merit scholarship and the recipient will be selected on demonstrated academic ability. Estimated award amount of $950 may vary.

Eunice T. and Marguerite B. MacRae Scholarship in French

The Eunice T. and Marguerite B. MacRae Scholarship in French was created by Eunice T. MacRae, a former UNCW Trustee, to benefit students at the University who are pursuing a degree in French. The recipient will be selected on demonstrated academic ability and special achievement. Estimated award amount of $500 may vary.
