How to Install Mathematica

  • University-Owned Computers for Faculty/Staff

    Please follow the directions below to download the Mathematica software on a faculty or staff university-owned computer.

    • Mac Users:
      1. Access Self-Service by opening it from Applications folder or searching for it via Spotlight.
      2. Log in to self service using your UNCW username and password.
        *Please note: You will need to be an admin to complete the installation of Read & Write Gold.  If you are not an admin of your machine, please contact the TAC at 910-962-4357.
      3. Once the main screen loads, click the "Self Service" category on the right side.
      4. You should then be able to find the Mathematica installer on this page. Click the install button to start the installation.
    • PC Users:
      1. Access Software Center by clicking the Start button, typing “software” and/or selecting the Software Center icon.
      2. Navigate to the "Applications" tab, and select Mathematica.
      3. Select Install.


  • Faculty and Staff Personally-Owned Machines

    To install Mathematica on a personally-owned faculty or staff machine please select the button below, and fill out the form to request a home-use license from Wolfram.

  • Student Personally-Owned Machines

    To install Mathematica on a personally-owned student machine, please follow the directions below.

    1. Create an account (New users only):
      1. Go to and click "Create Account."
      2. Fill out form using your email, and click "Create Wolfram ID."
      3. Check your email, and click the link to validate your Wolfram ID.
    2. Request the download and key:
      1. Fill out this form to request an Activation Key.
    3. Click the "Product Summary page" link to access your license.
    4. Click "Get Downloads," and select "Download" next to your platform.
    5. Run the installer on your machine, and enter Activation Key at prompt.

The first three tutorials are excellent for new users and can be assigned to students as homework to learn Mathematica outside of class time.
