VPN: Off Campus Access to Files

The VPN (Virtual Private Network) allows for authenticated, encrypted connections to UNCW campus computing resources. You can access and use the Web servers and any other UNCW computing services from off-campus locations as if you were on campus. We recommend that any files you wish to access from off-campus through the VPN be moved to OneDrive, rather than connecting to a local desktop in your office.

VPN

*Important Message: Not all teleworkers need to use VPN services to perform their work or learning functions. Most UNCW services are Web-based and can be accessed through a Web browser or Horizon. In the event that you do need to use the UNCW VPN to perform a work or learning function, please disconnect from the UNCW VPN as soon as you complete your task.

VPN is not needed for the following services:
  • Horizon
  • Outlook Email / Office 365 Email
  • Canvas
  • OneDrive
  • SharePoint Online
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Echo 360
  • Zoom
  • Office 365
  • ImageNow
  • Cascade
  • mySeaport
  • SeaNet

The VPN (Virtual Private Network) allows you to access and use the UNCW computing services from off-campus locations as if you were on campus.

How can this help me telework?

  • Use Remote Desktop. If you have applications installed on your on-campus workstations you can use VPN to access your on-campus machine or, as an alternative, you can use Remote Desktop through Horizon
  • Access the UNCW Voicemail User Preferences Web portal, a user-friendly Web interface used to adjust your voicemail settings, located at https://mss.uncw.edu/user. (more)
  • You can use VPN to access/edit your personal (people.uncw.edu), student (student.uncw.edu) or student organization (student.uncw.edu/org/) website.
  • Connect to Banner, SSRS Reporting, Chrome River and other services.
    • You can also connect through Horizon and use the OCI Google Chrome Browser to access these services.
  • Sammy / Timmy: Instead of Sammy / Timmy we strongly recommend you use OneDrive, cloud storage that lets you securely store, access and protect your files; however, in the event you need to access a file on Sammy or Timmy you will need to use VPN.
New VPN is here!

We have expanded our VPN services by increasing our bandwidth from 225 Mbps to 800 Mbps and session capacity from 200 concurrent users to 1500 concurrent users to provide a better user experience.
