We'll help you and your mentor to connect with events throughout the semester. In the past, these have included everything from on-campus talks and pizza parties to off-campus outings to go kayaking or bowling, see a football game, go to the movies, or meet the mayor. Why become an international student mentee?

Connect with your new campus and fellow studentsFour students at Global Cafe

It can be hard to settle into a new place, but a mentor has volunteered to show you around and welcome you to UNCW. They're here to answer any questions you may have, from how to use library resources to finding the best beach spots.

Learn about American and North Carolinian culture

The best way to learn about a new culture is through friendship! Our student mentors want to teach you about what it's like to live here, and they want to learn about your home, too.

Improve your English language skills

Studying in English helps, but having casual conversations with friends is one of the best ways to become fluent. (And learn the most important slang.)

Start a friendship that could last a lifetime

Many of our mentor-mentee pairs become fast friends, and stay in touch long after the semester ends!

Alina mentor

“When I studied abroad, I didn’t have a mentor, and therefore dealt with the anxiety of not knowing anyone was there. That is why, when I came back, I wanted to help international students dealing with the uncertainty of studying in another country. I also enjoy learning about other cultures, and there is no better way to do this than by becoming a mentor. My favorite part of being a mentor has been seeing my mentees really grow as people while being in another country.”

--Alina Ramos, Business Administration major and two-time international student mentor

"I love being a mentor because I can learn different languages and about different cultures. There is so much to learn. Plus if I ever wanted to visit my mentee's country, I’d have a place to stay. "

--Ceyda Ozogul, Psychology major and three-time international student mentor

"Having lived overseas my whole life and as a student coming in from an international country, I knew exactly what I needed to do. The cultures and values you learn as a mentor provide a world view like none other, and provide you with long lasting relationships that cross borders. I have been privileged to serve as a mentor for over ten amazing individuals who have given me amazing experiences I could not have gained otherwise, including trips to other cities, states, and even countries! The best part about being a mentor is that you are there to make a difference and an impact on their life--but in the end, you realize how much of a bigger difference they made on yours. I encourage anyone who is considering being a mentor, as it is not simply a job, but an unforgettable journey."

--Andrew Seibel, Business Administraton major and ten-time international student mentor
